Biografia

Costa Mario nasce a Torre del Greco nel 1936 è docente di Estetica, presso la facoltà di Filosofia dell'Università degli Studi di Salerno, e di Metodologia della critica presso l'Università di Napoli. E' ideatore e direttore di "Artmedia", seminario/Laboratorio permanente di estetica, di media e di comunicazioni attivo presso il Dipartimento di Filosofia dell'Università degli Studi di Salerno dalla fine degli anni '70.

A partire dalla fine degli anni '60 ha fornito un complesso di interpretazioni filosofiche ed estetiche di numerosi movimenti dell' avanguardia artistica e letteraria di grande importanza, anche estetologica, ma, all'epoca, pressoché ignoti in Italia.

A partire dagli anni ’70 la sua attività di ricerca è prevalentemente rivolta all’esplorazione dei nessi esistenti tra scienza, tecnica e produzione artistica, e gran parte del suo lavoro è dedicato alla riflessione sulle implicazioni filosofiche ed estetiche dei nuovi media tecnologici.

Egli ha criticamente considerato, anche nelle tematiche dei Corsi universitari da lui tenuti, una serie di dottrine estetiche e di autori ritenuti particolarmente utili e funzionali alla ricerca stessa: la filosofia della tecnica di un Heidegger o di un Gelhen, l'antropologia e la culturologia tecno-genetiche di un Leroy-Gourhan o della "scuola di Toronto" (da Innis a McLuhan) o, ancor più specificamente, le metodologie di analisi estetica ampiamente e variamente tecno-riferite di Herbart, Viollet-Le-Duc, Semper, Benjamin, Focillon,Wittkower, Kubler…, sono state da lui in vario modo ripensate e assunte come punti di riferimento per una comprensione dello stato attuale dell'estetico e della produzione artistica.

E' fondatore e direttore scientifico della Rivista internazionale multilingue "Epiphaneia", interamente dedicata alla ricerca estetica e tecnologica. E' autore, dalla fine degli anni '60, di una quindicina di volumi. Nel 1990 ha ottenuto il premio nazionale "D. Fabbri" con l'Estetica dei media (Lecce, 1990).

Nel 1990 presenta per la prima volta in Italia presso l’Università di Salerno due videoplays di Samuel Beckett.

Nei mesi di novembre/dicembre del 2002 co-organizza a Parigi la VIII Edizione di Artmedia.

Ha partecipato inoltre all’organizzazione di convegni ed eventi a Parigi, Köln, Toronto, Tel Aviv, San Paolo del Brasile…

Poetica

Lo specifico del lavoro scientifico da lui svolto consiste infatti in un ripensamento del senso che l'estetico e l'artistico vanno assumendo nella fase attuale della irruzione delle nuove tecnologie elettro-elettroniche della scrittura, dell'immagine, del suono, della spazialità, della comunicazione… Egli ha assegnato alla propria attività di ricerca tre compiti fondamentali: - ripercorrere e reinterpretare la storia delle vicende artistiche, e soprattutto di quelle del '900, alla luce del principio della imprescindibilità del rapporto immaginario artistico / ambiente tecnologico; - documentare, ricostruire e comprendere la storia delle forme estetiche scaturite dalle singole tecnologie moderne o attuali e dalle loro ibridazioni; - definire la nuova epoca dell'estetico connessa alle neo-tecnologie elettro-elettroniche e lavorare a che questa si vada ben configurando sul piano delle realizzazioni e su quello della consapevolezza teoretica.
