Richard Long (Bristol, 2 giugno 1945) è un fotografo e scultore britannico. È un artista visivo, esponente di primo piano della Land Art, movimento che si colloca nell’ambito dell’arte concettuale.

Biografia:

Richard Long è nato a Bristol in Inghilterra nel 1945 e attualmente vive e lavora nella medesima città. Ha studiato presso la West of England College of Art e nel 1966 ha iniziato gli studi al Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design di Londra.

Fino a oggi Long ha tenuto numerose mostre nei musei più importanti del mondo, fra le quali si ricorda "La strada è sia posto che linea" (The Path is the Place is the Line) presentata presso il Museo d'arte moderna di San Francisco nel 2006, "Camminando segnando la via" (Walking and Marking) esposta nella Galleria nazionale di Scozia nel 2007, la mostra del museo d'arte moderna e contemporanea di Francia nel 2008, ecc. Nel 2009 ha tenuto una mostra molto significativa dal titolo "Cielo e terra" (Heaven and Earth) presso la Tate Gallery di Londra in Inghilterra.

Nel 1976 Richard Long ha rappresentato l'Inghilterra in occasione della biennale di Venezia. Nel 1989 Long ha vinto il "Premio Turner" (Turner Prize) e nello stesso anno ha conseguito il Premio Imperiale Giapponese nella sezione di scultura. L'anno successivo ha ricevuto L'Ordine delle Arti e delle Lettere dal Ministero della Cultura francese. Al giorno d'oggi le opere di Richard Long sono presenti nelle numerose collezioni internazionali, sia pubbliche che private, tra le quali le più importanti sono la Tate Gallery di Londra, il Museo d'arte moderna di New York（MoMA）, la Galleria nazionale del Canada, il Museo d'Arte Moderna di Parigi, ecc.

Poetica

Richard Long è uno degli artisti più rappresentativi del Land Art di tutta l’Inghilterra. Durante i suoi studi si oppose alla Pop Art e si dimostrò più interessato al rapporto fra l'arte e la natura. Le opere di Long sono più pure rispetto a quelle dei suoi colleghi americani, sono semplici ed eleganti. Come sostiene l’autore stesso, il suo scopo è "toccare leggeramente la terra" assumendo un ruolo di protettore della natura piuttosto che di esploratore.

Quest'opera rappresenta l'itinerario di un viaggio dalla casa di Long a Bristol fino a St Martin. Durante il viaggio l'autore ha soggiornato in un campo di Wiltshire dove ha ripercorso lo stesso tragitto avanti e indietro fino a lasciare una traccia lineare fotografando poi il risultato. L'opera mostra che Long ha già trovato un linguaggio visivo per i suoi concetti di longevità sull'impermanenza, movimento e relatività.

E' un'opera dedicata alle Olimpiadi di Londra. Richard Long ha disegnato delle linee curve davanti ai ciclisti sulla strada. Nonostante l'autore sia solito utilizzare il fango, questa volta ha utilizzato una vernice di colore bianco, presentando un'immagine corrente e costante che sembra un fiume di colore.
