Evolutionary art
L'arte evolutiva sfrutta i meccanismi del processo evolutivo biologico per creare delle opere d'arte che cambiano in continuazione secondo gli schemi di un algoritmo evolutivo.
L'algoritmo sottopone i risultati della computazione ad un processo di incrocio, mutazione e selezione ispirati a quelli dell'evoluzione delle specie biologiche di modo da avere individui che si adattano alle condizioni a cui vengono sottoposti.
In particolare nella evoluzione interattiva la selezione viene applicata esplicitamente dallo spettatore che seleziona gli individui più piacevoli esteticamente (come nel caso di Electric Sheep), o in alternativa implicitamente, ad esempio a seconda del tempo che il fruitore passa vicino ad un'opera d'arte evolutiva.
Parimenti, l'evoluzione può essere impiegata come meccanismo per generare un mondo di individui adattivi, nel quale selezione e spinta evolutiva vengono imposte dal programma stesso senza che lo spettatore giochi un ruolo attivo in esso, come nel caso del progetto Black Shoals.
Lo stesso sistema può essere applicato ad algoritmi generatori di suoni, in tal caso si parla di evolutionary music.
