Perchè discutere di Software Libero nel contesto dell'arte e della cultura della rete?

Da circa due anni, il Software Libero o "sorgente aperta" ha attirato un'attenzione crescente delle culture artistiche della rete. Le installazioni guidate di questa conferenza, tenutasi per la prima volta a Berlino nel 1999, erano l'evento più prolifico per creare un ponte tra le arti, le lettere umanistiche e le scienze sociali da una parte e la cultura software dall'altra. La politica di copyleft (diritti non protetti) e la distribuzione libera di codice e conoscenza è subito risultata essere un terreno comune di discorso. Visto come una pratica letteraria, lo sviluppo del Software Libero è un'avanguardia della scrittura in reti digitali e ancora di più: da quando il Software Libero è al centro dell'infrastruttura tecnica di Internet, esso ha scritto di gran lunga la propria rete digitale.

Definizione di software libero

In questo documento, "software libero" non si riferisce a "freeware, shareware" o altro software autore distribuito gratuitamente-- come Microsoft Internet Explorer, QuickTime e Real Player -, ma è inteso in conformità con le definizioni della fondazione del Sw Libero (http://www.fsf.org) per cui il software è 'free' (libero) come la libera espressione del discorso e non 'free' (gratis) come 'free beer' (birra gratuita)". Tra gli esempi più conosciuti di Software il kernel Linux, gli strumenti di GNU e il web server Apache.

Dal 1998, il termine "software libero" è in competizione con "Sorgente aperta", un termine lanciato da un gruppo intorno allo scrittore e programmatore Eric S. Raymond. Secondo questo gruppo, l'Open source è solo un nome diverso per la stessa cosa per ottenere più popolarità nel mondo dei computer.[2] La definizione di sorgente aperta (Open) quindi attinge alle linee guida del Free Sw di Debian (Deb),una distribuzione di GNU Linux non commerciale fatta da volontari. Le linee guida possono essere così riassunte :

1. Il software libero può essere liberamente copiato. 2. Non solo il codice binario ma anche il programma è eseguibile, il codice sorgente è liberamente disponibile. 3. Il codice sorgente può essere modificato e utilizzato per altri programmi da chiunque. 4. Non c'è alcuna limitazione sull'utilizzo di Software Libero. Anche se Software Libero è utilizzato per scopi commerciali, nessun onorario di licenza deve essere pagato. 5. Non c'è alcuna limitazione sulla distribuzione freeware di Software. Il software libero può essere venduto per denaro anche senza pagare i programmatori.

Poichè gli stessi criteri si applicano alla "sorgente aperta" (Open source), i due concetti non sono diversi in termini tecnici. Eppure ciascuno dei termini ha le proprie ambiguità: mentre "software libero" tende a venir confuso con Freeware e shareware, [4] "open source" è facile che venga confuso con "standard aperti" - come il formato HTML e il protocollo http- e con software Sun's Java il cui codice sorgente è pubblicamente disponibile, ma solo sotto una licenza restrittiva. E'particolarmente importante differenziare "sorgente aperta" e "software libero" da standard aperti. Mentre gli standard aperti sono un insieme di specifiche tecniche unificate stabilite da committenti come Internet Progettare Taskforce (IETF) e il consorzio World Wide Web (W3C), gli sviluppatori di "sorgente aperta" o di "software libero" codificano qualunque cosa apprezzano per proprio divertimento, e sono liberi di dividere i loro progetti e sviluppare il codice in direzioni separate se non può più essere raggiunta un'intesa .[5] Poichè i fraintendimenti di "sorgente aperta" sono così comuni, punterei sul termine meno popolare ma più chiaro di "Free software".
