Il Museo Marino Marini is situated in the historical centre of Florence inside the former San Pancrazio Church, a building that dates back to the beginning of the IV century A.D., between Via della Vigna Nuova and Piazza Santa Maria Novella. The museum area is developed in four floors and different paths have been designed to accompany the visitors through the appreciation of Marino Marini works, with particular attention to the exceptional three-dimensionality of his sculptures. The audience has the possibility to go round and round the works, to look at them from different angles and unusual perspectives. The exhibitions of Twentieth century and contemporary artists are organized in the crypt.

Origin and History:

Il Museo Marino Marini of Florence was born in 1998 and is promoted by Fondazione Marino Marini di Pistoia that, together with the Comune di Firenze, has established the Fondazione Marini S. Pancrazio. "The works of the permanent collection have been donated in different occasions by Marino Marini and his wife Maria. In 1980 the artist donated to the city of Florence the first group of works that comprised 22 sculptures, 31 paintings, 30 drawings and 30 engravings. Later, in 1988, the Marini’s widow gifted the city of Florence with other 42 works in order to make the museum’s collection more complete and exhaustive. In the meanwhile the museum’s patrimony acquired other 25 works donated by Mrs Marini, Mrs Del Vecchio and by the Jesi and Mrs Freccia’s estate. The museum only contains works by Marino Marini realized between 1916 and 1977, all of them are shown on the four levels of the San Pancrazio building." (from the Museum website).

The cultural association "L’Immaginario" has been directing the Educational Department of the museum since 1993 and proposes itineraries, creative workshops and special projects designed to spread the knowledge of modern and contemporary art.

Projects (realized/on-going/to be realized):

Projects:

The 5 hidden treasures: the project groups together 5 museums in Tuscany (Marino Marini e Stibbert in Florence, Pecci in Prato, Museo Archeologico Artimino in Carmignano and Museo Santa Maria della Scala in Siena) and intends to offer a new and unusual perspective on the museum’s works and structure.

" The 5 hidden treasures ", consists in five special tours in form of performances united by a common plot. Each of them has been developed according to the particular characteristics of each museum, thus enhancing its essence and vocation. The visits are guided by an actress and an actor of the Piccoli Principi theatre company.

Museobus scuole: is a project that connects six different museums in Florence – il Museo di storia naturale, l’Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, la Fondazione Scienza e Tecnica, il Museo fiorentino di preistoria, il Museo di casa Buonarroti and the Museo Marino Marini – and is funded by Piano Integrato delle Cultura dalla Regione Toscana. The Museobus project provides schools with a free transport service in order to facilitate the classes attendance to museum’s didactic activities. For the 2012/2013 season, Museo Marino Marini has designed special itineraries with guided visits.

Special Projects:

Art in my hands: is a project that comprises several activities and itineraries that allow art approach for special kinds of visitors, such as blind people, youth with cognitive delay or other disabilities and people affected by Alzheimer.

Me(yer) & mu(sei): it is a project, funded by Regione Toscana, in which the Museo Marino Marino collaborates with the paediatric hospital Mayer. The project offers special workshops in the hospital playroom to enable the small patients to learn about ancient and modern art.

Figures with words: is a book that uses a narrative approach to the museum and to the works of Marino Marini. The book consists of a narrative part and an addendum. The narration comprises theatrical dialogues between Marini’s works, written by the famous children author Roberto Piumini and accompanied by the photographs of the young Japanese photographer Hide Ashizawa. The addendum, by Cristina Bucci and Chiara Lachi, helps the reader to understand more thoroughly the artist and the works that inspired the theatrical dialogues.
