Seven actors and fifteen monitors move in the space outlining trajectories, creating scenes, reproducing gestures and actions that are then processed using the technological possibilities of video. The live images, on the screens, are portions of the show that is being performed at the same time on other off stage sets. Real and simulated characters become the players in a new and unpredictable performance that finds its most suitable place of research and contact with the audience in the constant flow between the artificial setting of the video and the live theatrical action: a man on stage blows dust out of his cupped hand and a cloud of dust spreads on the screens...

The abstract room is a mental space, the interior of a subject that for a brief moment of suspended time is overcome by sensations, obsessions, memories, images. In this timeless room the actors represent the image, reflected in one's conscience, of imaginary or experienced relationships that are exasperated or deformed. While the actors are performing on stage the monitors continually create a space beyond, where everything is amplified, where size and characters multiply. The music provides the rhythm, marking out the tempo and breath of the single universal, undetermined body that is the primary entity of this show.

A disk made up of side by side television monitors rises up from beneath the ground, the structure would appear to be an alien shape that might belong to the past as much as to the future. The show starts out with the discovery of the disk, and immediately the image of a huddled body appears and slides along the curved trajectory of the screens until it disappears once again beneath the ground. After a second appearance, the figure seen in the screens appears in the flesh out of a hole: this is one of the butoh dancers that are involved in the performance. The show wavers between the evocation of a distant past and moments that are projected into the future, providing useful elements with which one may re-interpret the exterior environment and human nature

The emptiness, the silence, but primarily the darkness. The space falls into a pitch darkness where nothing can be made out. Two screens connected live to two infrared cameras move like eyes and their synchronised movements guide the spectator to decipher a space full of statues that are awaiting to be returned to a new level of perception, to a new sensitive condition. A dramatic context that tends towards simplification, seeks the essence, a feeling of abandonement, forces the desecrating element of technology within the confines of poetry.

Ultima forma di libertà il silenzio
+
At the foot of the vast crevice marked by the many cracks, an image has been placed that also bears a deep slit. Down there, covered and silent, lie the remains of the tragedy that befell the Belice area. The “broken image‿ urges to reveal the voices, gestures, plaster mouldings, stones and especially the eyes. A sequence of expressions filmed among the old people of Gibellina, together with shots of the mouths welded shut by silence, empty of words, but of that same emptiness that is “like a length of cloth, like the sacks used by merchants, where from the outside you can already guess the contents: potatoes, onions, grain or maize, almonds or flour...‿ This is a quote from the text by Ritsos for what is more a short flow of memory than a real show.

A re-visitation of archaic rites and rural exorcisms, this work is drawn from the characters and simple stories of the "benandanti" (the good travellers). Twelve stations, arranged along the narrow lanes of Cividale, broadcast images that remind one of the typical representations of the "madonnari" (pavement artists). Their magical quality lies in their fleeting nature and in the fact that the work may be wiped away in no time due to the effects of wind, rain or the scuffling feet of passers-by. The itinerary marked by these sound icons forms a liberal account that has no beginning or end, but just a time, within which they must be found, viewed, interrelated, and wiped away. This is the first part of the event, then we "fly" out of the city to take part in a meeting/clash of voices, sounds, and images that attempts to provide a less fraught interpretation of the hurried rituals of our modern day cultural existence.

''The Cenci'' 1997
+

The projected images of a video narrative that runs parallel to the words and actions of the actors, break up and move over the large cross-like area, which has become a stage. At times the images interact with the words and action, at other times they contradict them. The projected images act as a visual counterpoint that does not attempt to explain the text but rather to open it up to different interpretations and comparisons, that may help to get the audience involved to the point of inducing them to climb onto the cross at the end and interactively search for their own vision. All of this is set against a musical environment that imparts a narrative power, an expressive force that is able to take the words from the actors' mouths and spread them around the room, in the form of sounds, until they come into contact with the spectators' lips.

HE DANCE OF NATURE IN ANDREJ TARKOVSKIJ'S IMAGES
+
* ''[[Ultima forma di liberta' il silenzio]]'' 1993
This work was inspired by Tarkovskij and the images of nature often found in his films. It is the discovery of the fantastic within reality, of the infinite manifestations of the visible. A platform is placed in the centre of a very dark space, suspended above the floor so that it can tilt in order to simulate movement, as if it were a raft projected into the void. The dancers have nowhere to escape. They are surrounded by total nothingness, they are shipwreck victims engaged in a problematic voyage: through their recollections they must reconstruct the nature that has disappeared and thus recreate the conditions for their very tenuous chances of survival.

An impressive orchestra surrounds the only person on stage - the speaker recites his homage to the poet with a huge table spread out before him. This is Leopardi's desk-world, on which the spectators, from up on the balconies, can watch the images come to life. The narration unfolds in an intense repartee between the musical, literary and visual components. The various elements are present simultaneously, but are never related the one to the other. In fact this small fresco comes to life in the crossings, differences, and subtle vibrations provided by the many juxtapositions, the fleeting superimpositions, and the gaps left by these three parallel narrative elements.

An extremely subjective point of view that accompanies the fall from one point to the end point. The video projections present images that seem to belong to the world of children, with a touch of surrealism, an excess of reality, that make them feel alienated. Brightly coloured elementary figures that acquire shape in the light following their long period in darkness. In darkness Kaspar has dug his own world made up of small events, populated by insects and fluorescent animals. But this happy world will soon be filled by the most pompous conventions, the most treacherous rituals to such an extent that a distortion is produced. A data glove moves the images in real time and makes them interact with the dancers, seeking a form of dialogue that appears to respect all freedom but on the contrary becomes imposition.

A wall about 150 metres long by about 2 metres high encloses the exterior of the ex criminal asylum in Volterra. Its surface is entirely etched, covered with a vast narrative made up of words and drawings, tables and orbital diagrams. For twelve years Nanof has scratched it and lived it, as he constructed his own universe. The graffiti is like an archaeological find before its time, in which all the issues of our contemporary life are addressed. The film sets out to visit a parallel world, to enter the imaginary world of insanity, to read and see this incredible yet not desperate diary or treatise on life or wall in which the author’s mind has set sail.

"Everything works in harmony, like an orchestra, everyone has their part […] but there will always be an off-key note […]". Every morning, a few minutes before eight, a car streaks along a secondary road, cutting a corner decisively. Just a few moments later, on the same corner, a truck overtakes a small vehicle. With perfect timing the two drivers greet one another, sounding their horns. Felsen observes this sequence of events every morning. How can one interrupt the obsessive repetition of this ritual? How can one introduce a variable into this metaphor of his life? There's a price to pay for any form of change, in this case the only way of ensuring a permanent interference is to join the game yourself …

Sounds, images, colours, flavours. Everything in his prodigious mind is transformed into a world where there is no boundary between reality and image" (Alexander Lurija). Memory, not just as the capacity to link together the loose ends of things experienced or learnt, but rather as a way of journeying within oneself, a journey that is meant to awaken individual creativity and one's sensibility towards the things and the worlds of others. In the Film images, words, sounds, sensations follow one another moving from one trajectory to the next until they manage to confuse reality with imagination forming an articulated structure in which one may "lose" oneself, just as one may "find" oneself a moment later.

"The old pond, oh! - a frog leaps in - that watery sound". Like a haiku, the first video environment is created: a number of videos have been placed in a space enveloped in semi-darkness, with lights skimming the ground, focused on the objects on show, objects that these videos "transform into image". Each screen is treated like a miniature theatre in which the real object is reflected, with the aim of setting up an ongoing interrelationship between the space within the screen and the space outside it, between the physical stillness of the object and the changing nature of the represented image. A path strewn with minor deceptions, a way of highlighting the expressive use of the video medium.

Milan, a large PVC pyramid covers the entire space of the courtyard in front of the Palazzo del Senato. The structure is supported by eleven thousand cubic metres of hot air and inside it a few monitors, arranged like an upside down pyramid, reassemble the image of a set occupied by three female dancers. Entering this architecture is like entering a vast screen, a synthetic space created by a large bubble of hot air in the centre of which an unstoppable gesture and sound machine pulsates; the dancers move in such a way as to attempt to rearrange their logical wholeness while an orange moves from screen to screen. In this transfer the empty space between one monitor and the next becomes the air space of freedom where the spectators imagination comes together.

Everything appears to be quiet: an azure atmosphere and entrancing music welcome the spectator. The monitors opposite one another are crossed by the repetitive laboured arm strokes of the swimmer as he move tirelessly from one screen to another. The installation (synchronised using twenty four monitors and thirteen video programmes) was made using twelve video cameras fixed along the edge of a swimming pool, at the water level, and twelve monitors for simultaneous recording of an actor, Aurelio Gravina, swimming for an hour. In addition to the monitors’ feed, making up a single practicable scene, each scene contains three different levels in relation to the others - the water close-up, where the movements are asynchronous and defy composition; then the trajectory of the action that allows the figure to be composed; and, finally, the background that is doubled to escape the contiguity of the optical cone.

Views: a video tale that comes to life on twelve television screens placed in a semi-circular arrangement in a hall in the Fortuny palace in Venice. The twelve television sets are connected to twelve television cameras positioned in various points of the city. These black and white images on the monitors interact with other colour images, of a story, performed by the actors of the Giorgio Barberio Corsetti company. This video environment shows the changing relationship between the real and the imaginary, it acts as the place where it all takes place, an event rather than a work of art; the spectator is the "visionary" that is called on to provide his own imaginary heritage in an attempt to breech spatial limitations such as: external/internal, real/virtual, physical/mental.

We are forced to be quick in narrating, informing, seeing and updating. As if it were necessary to produce an unstoppable flood, a movement that is constantly accelerating, the effect of which is perceived but not the cause.
+
* ''[[Totale della battaglia]]'' 1996
The installation sees the monitors placed on the ground to form a conveyor belt in which the images are channelled - a fluid that flows from one television to another with only the movement and the transfer of colour noticeable. The unrelenting rhythm is only broken when it is crossed by unpredictable apparitions, stumbling into the event. The speed slows into a single image of itself, a figure detaches from the luminous path and frees itself into the environment. The moment the figure vanishes, the route resumes its flight until the next meeting.

On the monitors the “upturned‿ stare of a Meteosat satellite covers and studies the earth’s surface. The narration of Celestial Paths takes its cue from the title of the exhibition that housed it, "L'amour de Berlin". The assonance with “le mur de Berlin‿ evokes a reflection on the wall as a boundary that defines the areas of the world. Today the stare of the satellites, instantaneous communication, the penetrability of frequencies seem to cross every frontier. But perhaps there exist new invisible barriers that increase divisions and protect privileges; networks which also trap “the dove‿, chosen as the symbol of peace because of its freedom to trace paths that overcome frontiers and walls.

A violent contrast - a cobalt blue that stands out in the darkness of the room. In the video screens, filtered through an infrared device, we see the white silhouettes of various hands - that touch objects of different kinds. At first the objects do not show up, but the heat transferred through manipulation to the objects gradually makes them visible. Touching is seeing. The thermal camera is faced with the problem of making the shape shown persist, tearing it from its freeing vacuum: that dark space in which it seeks to return as soon as it is no longer touched, and grows cold. Time makes the object unstable, transforming it into a constant transfer of new intensities.

Travel almost always implies a desire for deep inner change, a need for new experiences or a return to ones origins. But this is a backward journey, a voyage turned on its head. It is not people that leave, instead the travelling is done by objects, symbols, wishes, memories. The x-ray images flow unceasingly within the screens, cold and incisive. The objects flow and are wishes, nightmares, aims, hopes, each with their aura of history, each with their aura of human experience.

Six tables, six virtually still figures - a lady lying down, a fly buzzing on the tabletop, a drop of water obsessively falling into a basin. This feeling of apparent calm is suddenly disrupted when anyone touches the image - it reacts, it is triggered, and a small part of its story unfolds. The relationship between real and virtual is tested on everyday materials, with no form of technological 'interface' - the spaces are broken up, virtual and physical reality become one. The meaning of this work is couched in image's shift from being a simple object of contemplation to becoming a direct source of experience that impels the spectator to interact with it.

A foot steps on a figure trampling it - it reacts, it moves, and lets out a shout. Various feet cross a space, trampling many figures that break up, raise their voices. Gradually a "choir" is brought to life through the movements of the bodies. In the centre of the space there is a partially unrolled piece of felt, a kind of large carpet - the projected images form a weave that seems to replace the symbols and images found in a traditional carpet decoration. The carpet as nomad territory, as a meeting place, as a status symbol for secular or spiritual power, all this is overlain with a new cosmography of inert bodies that are ready to react as we pass, a metaphor for a world order that is always being trampled on by the feet of those in power.

This video evironment, based on the “battle of San Romano‿ by Paolo Uccello starts out as a set of pieces that have yet to be put together. It is the eye of the beholder that is free to decide the course the images will take. The two corridors, lined with a series of video-projections lead to a central area, where a truly spectacular setting has been installed. The scene is completed by the projection of a new overview of the battle. On entering this setting the spectator hears voices resounding, that inevitably lead him on - a succession of calls, screams, and clapping of hands starts up. The images called up by the sounds emerge from the water, the land, the leaves, with the spectator becoming the leading actor in the event.

An expanse of electronic water. Something, very soon, is bound to happen. While the feet continue to stick to the watery surface, it moves, ripples, lights up, and a figure starts to take shape among the little waves. This is a birth. The images, like virtual twins of real bodies, come to life following a narrative structure that harks back to the myth of Theseus and Ariadne. The bodies re-emerge, perform their actions and stop, awaiting another passage. Thus the dance of steps begins, respectful, careful, and gradually becoming more and more hurried and fretful. The music envelops the space and the spectator in a wave of changing and intermingling sounds.

Three large parachutes, like clouds on which strange airy figures float, - angels maybe, fallen from favour through some misbehaviour. These earthly figures, are outlined , yet hollow within - this is why they float in the air trying to grab hold of objects, to hang onto them like shipwrecks clinging to the floating debris . It seems as if all is couched in a seeming calm until the spectator's blowing doesn't reach the parachute - it blows up and pitches the angel out of its opaque fluidity, the angel's "empty" equilibrium could explode or be blown far away. The parachute - "a means of survival" - comes to life with many sounds: some soft, modulated, sweet puffings, other fierce mechanical blasts.

The visitors cross the narrow metal strip of the bridge, throw a glance beyond the protective barrier into the empty space and as if playing with echoes shout “to see what happens‿. Then in the whirlpool at the bottom of the pit, following the spiral motion of the water vortex, a figure will appear to the onlookers, and then drawing energy from its circular motion, it will dart upwards towards the audience, as if attempting to grab at them or as a way of escaping the luminous shadows down there at the bottom of the pit.

Six short theatrical pieces suspended in the midst of their continuous and repetitive narration, await an impossible conclusion. Six situations, vaguely inspired by the same number of stories, that carry the spectator into various inhabited and habitable worlds via “sensitive‿, animated doors. Partly as guest, partly as intruder, the spectator is called on to perform a series of different tasks - narrator, reader, director, and time traveller. The scene shifts from the space around the landing to nearby a translucent door where one can attempt to eaves drop without being seen. But the sensitive space detects the presence of visitors and forces them to take an active part by throwing open the door to the environment over which it stands guard.

The video environment reproduces a space that is half way between real and artificial, in which advanced technological devices merge with the return to ancient practices: whisper your secret into the tree hollow! This was the advice proffered by the wise elders to the young inhabitants of the valleys, to free them of their ancestral fears and help them come to terms with the places they were to live in. The audience wanders around the “wood‿, interacts with it through whispers and shouts. The branches of the trees grow magically, flowers and fruit, defying the laws of nature, blossom at incredible speed reviving a fantastic world suspended between fairy tale and reality.

In the techno-global and interethnic village of the year 2000, the boundaries of renewed separatisms abound. The dividing line between natural and artificial, between the real and the virtual world is shifting. In this work three automatic glass doors greet the spectator, opening wide, welcoming thresholds unopposed to any external presence. But on the other side of the glass screens the video-projected figures are moving frantically, smacking into the solid barriers erected by a different yet seductive culture that does not envisage the sharing of privileges. The interactive device takes its cue from the complexity of human relationships and the installation space is transformed into an "anthropological place", in which the opening and closing movements do not always occur as expected.

The installation is made up of four membranes of approximately 2 mt. in diameter similar to large drums, on which images of hands that show their palms in great detail are video-projected. Touching each drum, or rather beating it hard enough to create a sound, the detail of the image moves in the direction of the gesture that created the sound. Each hand shows the signs, the furrows, the outlines of the life of the man to whom the hand belongs. The dark, sombre tones of the drums are mixed in with sampled sounds recorded in the environment and belonging to the culture to which the image refers. The journey ends the moment one manages to glimpse the little object hidden amid the folds of the hand. At this juncture the hand shies away carrying with it its small symbolic treasure and sends it on the internet. It thus offers the object to anyone that wishes to get in touch with it, in the briefest of encounters.

A journey of feelings; an affectionate gesture dedicated to someone; the shipwreck as an image of the impossibility of expressing, of completing this gesture; rafts as unexpected salvation, a new possibility of completing the journey, of making the gesture reach its destination. Three wooden tables, each of which bears the signs of a break, are rafts to which one may cling. On the edges of the tables one can make out hands that try to lift the body they belong to up onto the table, to safety. The audience by touching the surface in different ways can help or hinder the possibility of the shipwrecks of reaching safety by climbing aboard the raft.

The exhibition is constructed around five large landscapes that emblematically represent the legs of an actual sensory itinerary in places around the Mediterranean. The result is a journey carried out within a geographic area where the abundance of signs is caused by the extraordinary and tormented allure of its land, but also by the timeless richness of its cultures and the mixture of races, religions, customs represented by the people that embrace this stretch of sea. It is a research that crosses the ideal genetic code of a stratified identity made up of primary elements: materials, sounds, colours, smells, gestures, processes and relationships. Arranged in sets, these elements generate landscapes: these are "unstable" video-installations, interactive devices that use technology like a language to foster the spectators' involvement and participation, and invite him to share with us the countless issues that this itinerary presented us with. The choice to tell the tale of the Mediterranean through images of landscape, bears witness to our need to establish a direct relationship with the land, to compare what we imagined with what we experienced, setting down our tripod in these "open air" situations.

Two screens, two simultaneous points of view, two eyes that focus on this episode taken from Homer's epic. At times the images match as happens with human vision, and at other times they are separate and interchangeable, as happens with thought. The screens, placed side by side, recreate scenes and landscapes and the images of the actors move from one space to the next in a constant swapping of identities and roles. The emotions are heightened by the drawn out alienated time scale of the narration and the spread out slow motion of the action. The memory of the fight seeps into the landscapes' very texture, winds its way into the dancer's bodies, and a true synthesis is reached, devoid of all mythical allusion or epic reconstruction.

Thanks to editing, excerpts from Ejzenstejn’s film and footage of a concert performance of Prokofiev’s cantata come together in the video with the aim of interpenetrating through the use of video processing. The performers in the film and concert appear side by side in the same picture. As was the idea of both Ejzenstejn and Prokofiev, who worked in close contact for the film and composition’s production, the video aims to retrace this co-operation, reinventing a series of associations between the musical content and a number of images from the film.

A particular succession of structural cross-references represent an effort to fuse genres and languages – musical, cinematographic, and the strictly video-electronic one.

Porto Marghera, the search for signs in a poisoned, hard, landscape. One finds a few life forms - an embryo of fertility mixed in with the remains of a people that has lived and suffered there, and has found its own identity in this suffering. Small indications of life that are confronted by immense empty or devastated spaces. Vast cathedrals, rusty machinery, reinforced concrete bunkers threatened by minute cracks - small havens for new vegetation. Hell has burnt itself out and left space for the first signs of life. The gaze examines, searches and focuses on the microscopic presences in the pools, beneath the layers of dust, amidst the lightness of feathers. What we see materialises on three screens that synchronise the impressions, emotions, and fears.

This museum is dedicated to preserving and developing the historical memory of the Resistance movement in the provinces of Massa Carrara and La Spezia. Not just the memories of partisans but also of peasants, deportees, inmates, women, and an entire population all involved in the battle to survive under Fascist and Nazi domination. Inside, a table is divided into two halves by a series of vertical screens. By passing their hands over the surface of the table, the visitors can flick through a collection of stock footage as if it were a virtual book on the subject. The various sequences shown in the book are further illustrated on the screens on which the enlarged faces of the people interviewed appear. In this way the narrative form of the oral testimony goes hand in hand with technology, encouraging a shared visual experience as well as one that involves listening

Studio Azzurro

"Coro" (1995) videoambientazione interattiva

Biografia

Inoltre vi collaborano: Antonio Augugliaro, Marco Barsottini, Alberto Bernocchi Missaglia, Reiner Bumke, Mario Coccimiglio, Ornella Costanzo, Laura D’Amore, Anna De Benedittis, Daniele De Palma, Laura Gatta, Elisa Giardina Papa, Tommaso Leddi, Silvia Pellizari, Lorenzo Sarti, Emanuele Siboni,Delphine Tonglet.
