La Monte Young è un compositore, performer americano. È uno dei compositori importanti nel campo di Musica Avant-Garde oppure musica sperimentale. Particolarmente è famoso come il compositore di Minimal music insieme a Steve Reich, Philip Glass, e Terry Riley.


Biografia:

È nato nel Idaho nel 1935. Studiò in Los Angeles City College, all'Universita di California, Darmstadt in Germania. Durante lo studio suonò anche un sassofono con jazz musicisti Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry. Imparò musica elettrica, e fu interessato a Anton Webern, Canto greogoriano, musica classica indiana, la musica gamelan di Indonesia.

Le prime opere furono basate da Twelve-tone music. Durante lo studio a Darmstadt fu interessato alla teorica di musica conoscendo John Cage.

Partecipando al gruppo Fluxus negli anni 1960, scrisse la serie di opera "Compositions 1960" tra cui c'è un'opera che ha impostato il rumore della sala dei concerti come un elemento della musica. Questa opera e An Anthology (1963) furono diventati influenza grande sull’ arte concettuale e il movimento di Fluxus.

In seguito, scrisse "Compositions 1961" composta di 29 opere che sono state eseguite in collaborazione con Fluxus incluso il dipinto dei istruzioni di Yoko Ono e tra cui indica al esecutore che disegna una linea diretta e seguila. Questa indicazione sarebbe potuto servire per la definizione di Minimalismo (secondo Florian Cramer, questa opera può essere considerata un lavoro seminale di software art).

Dagli anni 1962 iniziò a introdurre nelle sue opere Musica drone. Sarebbe il suo capolavoro “The Well-Tuned Piano” negli anni 1964, di più di 5 ore, che può essere considerato una opera di Minimalismo.

Dagli anni 1970 studiò anche sotto la guida del vocalist nord-indiano Pandit Pran Nath.

Young lavorava assimilando gli elementi che aveva imparato e grazie ai suoi lavori si creava il modo che concettualizzi la musica come un fenomeno psico-acustico. Oltre a questo, i suoi lavori hanno influenzato a varietà di musicisti come John Cale, Tony Conrad, Jon Hassell, Rhys Chatham, Michael Harrison, Henry Flynt, Catherine Christer Hennix.
