ECLAP, European Collected Library of Artistic Performance, is a European project of theoretic and applied research for the development of Europeana, the digital library of the European Union. ECLAP, which is coordinated by Prof. Paolo Nesi from the department of Systems and Informatics of the University of Florence, focuses on Performing Arts and on the necessity to manage informatics problems (e.g. multimediality), librarianship (e.g. metadata) andlegal issues (e.g. copyright) that at moment can hinder the access to artistic works through Europeana.

Objectives:

The main objectives of ECLAP are:

  • Collect and make available, via ECLAP and Europeana, European most relevant performing arts contents (shows, lessons, teaching materials, etc., in the forms of videos, audio, documents, images, animations, playlists, annotations, interactive contents, etc.).
  • Create a stable and open network about the best practices of European performing art institutions, to help them to exploit digital content and to talk about new technologies and tools;
  • Provide the major performing arts institutions with solutions and services such as: content ingestion, metadata enrichment, content distribution, content aggregation into Europeana, IPR management, content channel visibility, play lists, annotations, multilingual semantic/fuzzy search queries, etc.
  • Provide solutions and services for a variety of users: teachers, students, performers, researchers, and performing arts lovers for edutainment, infotainment and entertainment.

Sectors of intervention:

Conservation, diffusion and development of Performing Arts.

Activities:

Research

Among the main objectives of the project there is the research of the "Best Practices" and the suitable instruments to preserve, spread and promote Performing Arts.

There are also working groups with specific research tasks:

  • WG-A: Performing Arts Education and Training Tools: is in charge of developing an educational outlet for the project, so that students and teachers can exploit its resources.
  • WG-B: Intellectual Property and Business Models for Content: analyses the best practices and the applications for the intellectual property and the business models for content.
  • WG-C: Digital Libraries Tools: studies the best practices and the instruments for Performing Arts digital libraries.

The research work is also promoted through a social network that allows the website’s users to create or take part to groups and forums of discussion and to comment, tag, valuate, share the contents, annotate audiovisual contents, etc.

Origin and history:

The archive was born as a project co-funded by the Ict-PspCip program of the European Commission. The project, that lasts three years, started in 2010 and is articulated in three stages: structural development, contents collection, and promotion.

The University of Florence (DISIT Lab, ECLAP coordinator, Paolo Nesi), the Centro Teatro Ateneo of the University La Sapienza in Rome, the theatre company Fo-Rame, the Fondazione Rinascimento Digitale and more than other 25 international institutions have coordinated the project.

Currently the website comprises more than one million files (documents, video, images, texts, audio) but is constantly growing.

Those are some of the artists whose works are available on the website: Dario Fo, Franca Rame, Tadeusz Kantor, Jerzy Grotowski, Peter Brook, Eduardo De Filippo, Martha Graham, Eugenio Barba, Umberto Eco, Vittorio Gassman, Carmelo Bene and Walter Murch.

Besides, ECLAP is integrated in a wider context of knowledge sharing and is part of Europeana, the European digital library.
