'bits & pieces' is an autonomous web installation that scours the web for sound files and creates sonic collages from what it finds. It attempts to find 25 new sound files every day, and then randomly chooses from those files to create a new piece every 15 minutes. Visitors to the site will hear the ten most recent pieces played back in order of newest to oldest. Each piece is written over after three hours, so no piece is recorded, catalogued, or 'permanently' available. 'bits' can be listened to at http://music.dartmouth.edu/~peter/bits. The thesis paper for bits, which contains an aesthetic discussion of the piece as well as all the source code, can be viewed at http://music.dartmouth.edu/~peter/bits/thesis/intro.html.
