Michael Snow nacque a Toronto il10 dicembre 1929, dove tutt'ora vive, e studiò all'Upper Canada College e all’Ontario College of Art dove si è laureato nel 1952, ma ha vissuto anche a Montreal, Chicoutimi e a New York.

Egli fece la sua prima esibizione importante nel 1957.

Da allora, la sua arte è diventata nota anche in Europa, e in Nord e Sud America.

Egli è un musicista (poli-strumentista ma principalmente di pianoforte).

Ha lavorato in tutto mondo (per la maggior parte con la CCMC di Toronto), Canada, Stati Uniti, Europa e Giappone.

I suoi film sono stati presentati festival in Australia, Canada, Francia, Germania, Gran Bretagna, Italia, Giappone, Paesi Bassi e gli Stati Uniti, e archiviati dall'Anthology Film Archives di New York City, dalla Royal Belgian Film Archives, Brussels, e dall'Oesterreichesches Film Museum, Vienna.

Il suo film “Wavelength” vinse il Grand Prize all'International Experimental Film Festival in Belgio (1967).

Un altro film “So Is This” vinse Los Angeles Film Critics (1982).

Michel Snow è anche pittore e scultore, sebbene dal 1962, molto del suo lavoro di galleria è fotografico e olografico.

Tutti le sue diverse opere sono rappresentate in raccolte private e pubbliche in tutto il mondo, incluso per esempio The National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Museum Ludwig (Cologne and Vienna), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Musée des Beaux-Arts e al Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Montreal.

Inoltre ha fatto video, film ed installazioni basate sull'importanza del suono , e disegnò libri, ad esempio Micheal Snow/A Esame (1970) e Cover to Cover (1975).

I suoi dipinti, sculture, photoworks e olografia retrospettivi sono stati presentati al Museo di Hara ( Tokio), i suoi film alla Cinémathèquie Française (Paris), Anthology Film Archives e all’Istituto Lumière (Lyons) Power Plant e all' Art Gallery of Ontario nel 1994.

Le esposizioni retrospettive e supplementari sono state montate alla Vancouver Art Galleria e al Museo di Arte Contemporanea (Montreal).

Per questo fu chiamato a partecipare alla riapertura al Centre Pompidou a Parigi nel 2000, e al MoMA a New York nel 2005.

A marzo 2006 i suoi lavori furono inclusi nella Biennale di Whitney.

Artista, creatore di films e musica, e non solo, anche vere opere multimediali, utilizzando molti mezzi, compreso il disegno, la verniciatura, la scultura e la fotografia.

Parlando dei suoi primi films egli stesso afferma “penso che le due cose più importanti nella mia vita… fossero che mio padre è diventato cieco quando io avevo 15 anni, e che mia madre… è una pianista molto fine.

Ha iniziato ad interessarsi all’arte durante i suoi anni della High School, ed ha cominciato a giocare con la musica con un gruppo così ha sviluppato anche le sue abilità nella pittura dopo un breve stint come artista commerciale, speso 18 mesi che viaggiano in Europa, giocando musica, i musei di visita e disegno.

In seguito ha lanciato la sua carriera nel 1956 con la sua prima mostra e dal 1962 al 1972 ha vissuto in un granaio nella vicinanza di Soho di New York City, dove ha prodotto una serie di pitture chiamate “donne ambulanti„.
