Origin and History:

The Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea is dedicated to the last three decades’ 'contemporary art and it has been conceived as a research centre and a museum.
Its complex structure comprises the Museum, the Centro di Informazione e Documentazione per le Artivisive (C.I.D.), and the Dipartimento di Didattica. Besides hosting one of the most important contemporary art collections, not only in Italy but also in Europe, the Centre organizes many temporary exhibitions every year.
It was founded in memory of Luigi Pecci, the son of the industrialist from Prato Enrico Pecci, with the contribution of the municipality of Prato and of several companies and private citizens. The architect Italo Gamberini (author also of the near Galleria Farsetti) designed the building. The works started in 1985 and the museum opened on the 25 of June 1988 with the exhibition Europa oggi.
The planimetry of the museum is rather complex and the architecture image that characterizes it reflects the desire of technological experimentation and geometrical accuracy. In 2007 a Dutch group won the international contest for the enlargement project. The works for the expansion started in 2008.
The big rooms in the first floor host the exhibitions of contemporary artists, while the permanent collection is located in the free section. The Centro d'Informazione e Documentazione with its library specialized in contemporary art was inaugurated in 1989 and currently it comprises circa 40000 volumes.
The centre’s collection is constantly evolving with the periodic purchase of works of contemporary artists, often at the end of the temporary exhibitions.

Projects (realized/on-going/to be realized):

Didactic section on-going projects:

  • I segni nel tempo

The project addresses the students of the 2nd cycle of 1st and 2nd degree primary and secondary schools.
During the school lectures the students are confronted with images of works form the Middle age, the Renaissance and contemporary times in order to introduce the topics concerning the image language and to valorise similarities and differences. During the workshop at the centre the students experiment some of the constitutive elements of visual language. The acquired information are then put into practice during the visit of the Mostra dell’Opera del Duomo to achieve a more aware interpretation of the work of art and the evolution of visual language.

  • Arte come comunicazione

Workshops, meetings and guided visits for students and instructors.

  • La creativitànel tempo

The project is designed to stimulate a non-specialized audience to approach art comfortably. The activity is aimed at valorising the pleasure of discovery allowing the acquisition of personal critical instruments to interpret the works. It is structured in 4 meetings – 2 conferences and 2 visits to local museums. The project will highlight how individual creativity is always expressed without prejudices and it will clarify some expressive aspects of contemporary art that can seem extravagant without the necessary cognitive instruments.

  • Art-therapy

Artistic/therapeutic workshop that the Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci has been proposing since 1993, in collaboration with the ASL of Prato, for adults in the care of the local Dipartimento di Salute Mentale (Department of Mental Health). Two qualified art-therapist guide the meetings.
