Crowe Nick nato a Barnsley, Sud Yorkshire, Inghilterra nel 1968

Biografia

Nick Crowe è un artista di Manchester la città dove ha studiato e dove attualmente vive.


Nutre uno specifico interesse nell’uso del vetro come materiale d’espressione contemporaneo (vedi le sue sculture 3 Cynical Objects 2001 e l’installazione Operation Telic 2005) e ha lavorato a lungo con mezzi digitali producendo opere per gallerie e presentazioni online.

Una campionatura di 7 siti tratti da un progetto abusivo di ciber occupazione, che utilizza i nomi di gallerie di Londra. 7 di 29 indirizzi di siti web SERVICE2000 era un progetto che è stato realizzato durante giugno e luglio 2000. Le opere mostrate sono delle ricostruzioni d’esempi archiviati di siti e URL, dai quali sono state fornite perchè non sono più disponibili online. E’ un film che si insinua tra programmi di navigazione, siti internet per rintracciare persone scomparse e pornografia on-line. E’ un film per Internet e su Internet: un’opera che cerca di tradurre l’estrema permeabilità della rete in un’esperienza quasi cinematica. E in particolare è un’opera d’arte progettata e creata per essere vista da una persona alla volta.

Poetica

Negli ultimi anni il lavoro artistico di Nick Crowe si è sviluppato attraverso l’utilizzo di video, performance, disegni e molti altri mezzi espressivi, passando anche attraverso realizzazioni di sculture pubbliche e ad altri interventi non necessariamente collegati agli spazi della galleria e del museo. Molte delle sue opere esaminano i paradigmi e le problematiche emerse dalla diffusione di Internet, esse cercano di gettare uno sguardo antropologico sui cambiamenti che Internet ha imposto sulle nostre relazioni sociali.In tutta questa serie di lavori, Crowe ha scritto libri, realizzato sculture, intagli in vetro, ma ha anche creato opere appositamente per la rete e una serie di animazioni digitali. Sempre all’interno di questo progetto, ha registrato il dominio di ventinove gallerie londinesi, ha creato volontariamente pagine web di pessimo gusto con tanto di musica di sottofondo e ha collegato fra di loro i vari siti, raccolti sotto il nome di SERVICE 2000 (vedi foto nelle opere). Alla base di questa ricerca c’è sempre il desiderio di descrivere e raccontare Internet come un propulsore di cambiamenti culturali, il suo lavoro cioè cerca di segnare come in una mappa questi luoghi e quei punti nei quali la rete ridisegna i confini sociali ed economici. Tracciare un identikit di chi passa le giornate a svolgere affari online, giocando in borsa e magari progettando proprie home pages e osservare tutti quegli e-mail che corrono velocissimi sui cavi. Il lavoro di Crowe è una sperimentazione interessante proprio perché in alcuni casi apre il confine dell’opera, dando la possibilità di intervenire da casa all’interno della mostra e viceversa grazie al web. Oltre che come artista Crowe ha lavorato in qualità di Direttore per l’Annual Programme, Manchester (1995-2001) ed è stato membro del comitato organizzante per il padiglione di Manchester alla Binennale di Venezia del 2001.
