Once you've seen the increible phenomenon of the Northern Lights, Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, is a great place to enjoy for a couple of days.

Hallgrimskirkja Church

The tallest building in the country is the 244ft Hallgrimskirkja Church, in Reykjavik, and, as you would imagine, it offers the best views anywhere in the city from its bell tower. This famous landmark is visible from almost everywhere in the capital and, once seen, the building is never forgotten. Designed by Guojon Samuel in the 1930s, the unusual structure was created from inspiration drawn from his fascination of lava formations. Many people say that the building resembles an ice formation, which is quite fitting considering its location.

Northern lights trips to Abisko in northern Sweden are not only spectacular because the village is one of earth's most ideal locations to view the aurora borealis, but also because of the unique opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the culture and heritage of the Saami people. These indigenous peoples are the native sect of the northernmost parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Koala Peninsula of Russia. They have long been discriminated against by the larger state forces of Scandinavia, primarily with regards to territorial possession and national identity. Nevertheless, despite such past coercion, the culture of the Saami people remains distinct and strong. At the centre of their heritage is music and literature. Exposure to the ways of such an original community is truly a highlight of all northern lights trips to the village of Abisko.

Looking into embarking on one of the wonderful Northern Lights trips to Iceland? If so, and you want to make your winter wonderland experience even more special, consider some of the other, optional extras you can take part in. Along with the sighting of the incredible Aurora Borealis, they're guaranteed to make your holiday in Iceland unforgettable.

Glacier Hiking

If you enjoy getting out there and exploring on foot, this excursion is for you. Small groups trips head out to discover the glacial tongue known as Seimajokull. While hiking over the glacial surface, you will find yourself marvelling at the beautiful ice formations, ridges and even sinkholes. If you're really keen there is the opportunity to try out some ice climbing on an ice wall. (All equipment for this is provided, but you must have appropriate footwear so that the crampons can attach appropriately.)

Horse Riding

For something completely different, horse riding through the Icelandic wilderness offers a truly exhilarating experience. These purebred horses are descended from the Viking steeds of the 9th century. Hardy, reliable and very gentle, these lovely animals are perfect even for beginners wanting to get in the saddle. Although the horses look fairly small in stature, this belies their innate strength, and they are strong enough to take riders of all shapes and sizes.

In terms of where horseback experience will take you, the opportunities are varied. One route will take you around a lake and on to a black volcanic beach, where you may be able to spot seals bathing on the shores. A slightly longer ride takes you up to Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, which offers dramatic views and spectacular scenery. hawaii kona coffee
