This debut novel of Aravind Adiga is social commentary that explores the culture of servitude in a country, which is regarded as the new economic powerhouse. It centers on Balram Halwai, a self-made man in every sense. The book traces the development of the character from his life in the "Darkness", his first job as a driver in the city to his rich, new life as an entrepreneur in Bangalore.

The novel details how he was born to low-caste parents in Laxmangarh, a typical rural village in India. He is forced to quit studies early in life in order to pay for his sister's dowry. He then begins to work in a teashop, Down Syndrome Tiger which he leaves in a short while to become a taxi driver. He takes employment as a driver in a rich household in the city of Delhi. While in the capital, Balram is exposed to the extensive corruption and the deep divide between the rich and the poor.

The rooster coop analogy used in the novel aptly describes the condition of the poor and the Indian economy. He realizes that the only way he can hope to free himself from his dismal life is by killing and robbing his boss. One day he murders his boss and flees to Bangalore with the money. There he starts his own business and gradually rises to become a successful entrepreneur. visit for more: Down Syndrome Tiger
